MIAA-WHAC CHALLENGE RESULTS
Calvin celebrated a record-breaking Friday as its indoor track and field team set records at two different venues.
At the Grand Valley State Big Meet in Allendale, senior
Sophie Bull (Denver, Co./Denver Christian HS) shattered the Calvin record in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:36.95. She took ninth in her heat of the 3,000 meters, trailing only races from Division I or Division II levels. Her time breaks the previous school record of 9:41.32 set by Sadie Heeringa in 2022.
At the MIAA/WHAC Challenge hosted by Aquinas College, senior
Mia DeJonge (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) crushed the 60 meter hurdles record with a time of 8.93 in the prelims of the race. Her time surpassed the previous record of 8.94 DeJonge shared with Jenna Dyksen and also moved her into the 22
nd spot on the NCAA III Indoor performance list. After resetting the record for herself in the prelims, DeJonge went on to lead a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the finals as she took first in a time of 8.99. Sophomore
Cadence Drougal (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) took second in 9.20 after racing to a time of 9.14 in the prelims. Freshman
Ava Sanchez-Mustapha (Okemos, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) took third with a personal-best time of 9.25.
Calvin had a big night at the MIAAWHAC Challenge.
Senior
Julienne Strydom (Meyerton, South Africa) won the long jump with a leap of 17-8. Senior
Rachel Post (Wycoff, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was seventh (14-9 ¾).
Freshman
Dasha Mason (Graham, WA/Graham Kapowsin) led a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish in the long jump, winning with a leap of 36-5 ¾ with junior
Alina Veltkamp (Lyden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) second with a season-best mark of 35-11 ¼ while freshman
Emily DeJonge (Renton, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) was third (33-11 ½) and sophomore Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was fourth (33-6 ¾).
Sophomore
Lily Burns (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was third in the weight throw (46-8 14) and eighth in the shot put (36-2 ¾). Senior
Mikah Bazuin (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS) was sixth in the weight throw (44-6).
Calvin went 3-7-8 in the pole vault. Senior
Katie Seinen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was third (11-1 ¾) with senior
Laura Robotham (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) seventh (9-8) and junior
Bethany Simons (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) eighth (9-2 ¼).
Freshman
Rayn Rutley (Fenton, Mich./Fenton HS) was third in the 60 meter dash (8.03) and freshman
Kaitlyn DiMaggio (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn HS) fourth (8.06).
Back at the GVSU Big Meet, sophomore
Alexis Ball (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) had a career-best time of 17:49.87 in the 5,000 meter run. Her time ranks third on the MIAA performance list. Freshman
Brynn Ellenbecker (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Northern HS) clocked a career-best time of 17:59.42 that ranks seventh on the MIAA performance list.
Sophomore
Jonathah Bouwman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 11
th in the 5,000 meter run (18:37.39). Senior
Catie Kramer (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton HS) had a career-best time of 18:52.32 with graduate student
Alaina Smith (Sterling, Il./Seoul Foreign School) 25
th (18:56.56.).
