GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's track and field team had a record-breaking evening at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Aquinas College Friday evening.
Freshman
Gabe Van Goor (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS) shattered his own school record in the 60 meter dash Friday night, placing second in a time of 6.99. Van Goor matched his previous school record time of 7.07 in the prelims before blazing across the line in under seven seconds for a new school mark. His time ranks third in the MIAA this winter. Van Goor was part of a 2-7 Calvin finish in the race with freshman Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) placing seventh in 7.19.
Calvin also went 3-5-7 in the 60 meter hurdles with freshman
Gavin Currie (Ada, Mich./Rockford HS) placing third (9.00), sophomore
Will Richardson (Stockton, Md./Â Snow Hill) fifth (9.19) and freshman
Nolan Viviano (Macomb. Mich./Eisenhower HS) seventh (9.32).
Sophomore
Jack DeKruyter (Holland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) had a strong race in the mile, placing fourth in 4:31.94. Calvin 6-8 in the 400 meters with senior
Jonathan Holloway (Lawton, Mich./Lawton HS) sixth (53.83) and senior
Levi Harris (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield HS) eighth (54.20). In the 200 meter dash, Richardson placed sixth (23.83) with Holloway seventh ((24.18).

Jackson Meyers (Grand Haven, Mich./Allendale HS) took first place in 3:35.10. It's 3200 meter relay of
Nathan Baker,
Caleb Baker, Gritters and Meyers placed fourth in 8:37.15.
The Knights sparkled in the field events.
Freshman
James McCoy (University City, Mo./Lutheran High School North) won the shot put with a collegiate-best throw of 47-7 ¾. He was also part of a 3-4-5-8 Calvin finish in the weight throw with sophomore
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West HS) third (51-9), freshman
Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield HS) was fourth (44-11 ½) with McCoy fifth (42-11 ½) and senior
Samuel Lamsma (Lakewood, Colo./Denver Christian HS) eighth (38- 9 ¾).
Junior
Luke Nguyen (Houston, Tex./Carl Wunsche Sr.) had a monster day, winning the triple jump with a season-best jump of 46-0 ½ that was just off his school record mark of 46-5 ¼. He was part of a 1-2-3-5-6-7-8 Calvin finish in the event. Freshman
Alex Guidry (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Creek HS) was second (43-9 ¾) while junior
Connor Johnson (Kingsley, Mich./Kinglsey HS) was third (43-5 ¾). Freshman
Sam Abdalla (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was fifth (41-10), sophomore
Carter Dimsdale (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest Christian HS) sixth (39-10 ¾), senior
Aidan Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) seventh (39-5) and senior
Devon Heckathorn (Grand Rapids, Mich./GR Catholic Central HS) eighth (38-7 ¾).
Abdalla had a big day, also winning the high jump with a jump of 6-3 ¼. In the pole vault, freshman
Zach Hartemink (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded a collegiate-best with a height of 14-10 ¼ that was good for third place.  Sophomore
Rhys Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton Kellogg HS) was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 20-7.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had a great evening," said Calvin head track and field coach
Adam Haldorson. "We had another school record and many season-bests which made for an exciting atmosphere. This meet gave several of our athletes who had not competed yet a chance to show what they can do and they performed well. We have a fun team with good chemistry. We are looking forward to the weeks ahead of us."
NEXT UP: Calvin will compete at an invitational hosted by MIAA member Trine University next Friday in Angola, Indiana.
