Calvin University freshman Jackson Merkel was named MIAA Men's Swimmer of the Week on Monday.
 
Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) won the honor after a strong performance at the MIAA Invite on Saturday at Venema Aquatic Center.
 
At the event that featured each MIAA swimming program, Merkel won both the 50 Freestyle (21.0) and 100 Freestyle (45.5) in times that were near his season-bests in both events.
 
Merkel's two wins helped the Knights take first place in the team event.
 
This marks the second time Merkel has won MIAA Swimmer of the Week honors this season. It is also the second time he won the award in the same week as his sister, Emma Merkel, who won MIAA Women's Swimmer of the Week on Monday.
 
Calvin swimming and diving will return to action this weekend for a pair of events. It will compete at Grove City College on Friday, January 30, before facing Carnegie Mellon University and Denison University on Saturday, January 31, at Carnegie Mellon.
