Calvin Men’s Swim and Dive Wins Dual Meet at Grove City College

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The 10th-ranked Calvin University men's swimming and diving team won its dual meet at Grove College College on Friday by a final tally of 157-94.
 
Calvin was competing on the first day of back-to-back meets on the road, and this meet featured a number of shorter races that resulted in seven individual wins for the Knights.
 
Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Ill./Normal West) got the Knights off to a strong start with a first-place finish in the 200 Freestyle in a time of 1:44.59. Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) finished right behind him in second place (1:44.63), followed by Kellen Morford (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Evan Haney (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) in third (1:46.1) and fourth (1:50.38), respectively.
 
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) won the 50 Backstroke in 23.15, followed by Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) in third (24.54) and David Gabrielle (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) in fourth (24.61). Platt also secured a second-place finish in the 50 Butterfly (22.66), followed by Morford in fourth (23.61).
 
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Ohio/Homeschool) won the 50 Breaststroke in 26.46, with Josh Krampe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) in second place in a time of 26.82.
 
Benjamin Wichart (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) followed with a win in the 100 Butterfly in 51.88. Daniel Miller (Arlington, Texas/Arlington) finished in second place in 52.11.
 
Logan was the next individual winner in the meet, taking the 100 Freestyle in 47.23 ahead of Stimpert (48.01) and Ziegler (48.26) in the top three.
 
Gabrielle won the 100 Backstroke in 52.59 as the Knights once against took home the top three places. Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville) took second (53.7) and Logan McKinney (Jackson, Mich./Jackson) took third (54.9).
 
The final first-place finish came in the 100 Breaststroke, where Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) won in a time of 58.0, followed by Antoine Douguet (Paris, France/Ecole Diagonale) in second place (58.49).
 
Calvin finished 2-4 in the 50 Freestyle, led by Jackson Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) in 21.45. He was followed by Will Bales (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Everett in third (21.78) and Taulbee in fourth (22.49). Merkel also finished third in the 100 IM (53.59) with Gemmen taking fourth (54.82).
 
After starting the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay (1:34.6), the Calvin 'A' 200 Freestyle Relay also took second place (1:25.52).
 
The Knights finished 1-3 in both diving competitions. Carson McIntire (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) won the one-meter competition with 119.3 points and took second off the three-meter board (120.35). Joshua Ring (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) won the three-meter competition with 126.85 and took second off the one-meter board with 114.8 points. Addison Van Soelen (Lawrenceville, Ga./Providence Christian Academy) took third off both boards.
 
NEXT UP: The Calvin swimming and diving team will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, January 31) when it competes in a triangular meet at Carnegie Mellon University against Carnegie Mellon and Denison University.
