RESULTS
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin men's indoor track and field team had a stellar day of competition at the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic on Friday inside the Kelly Family Sports Center. The Knights produced several personal best times that ranked high on the early-season MIAA and NCAA III indoor performance lists.
The Knights were particularly strong in the field events.
In the pole vault, Calvin placed four vaulters in the top 28 led by freshman
Zach Hartemink (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who took 10
th with a collegiate-bet vault of 14-10 that leads the MIAA and ranks 31
st in NCAA Division III. Sophomore
Nathan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was 23
rd (13-4 ¼) with junior
Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) placing 25
th (13-4 ¼). The vaults by Bengelink and Van Baren rank seventh in the MIAA. Freshman
Phinehas House (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) was 28
th (12-4 ½).
Van Baren had a big day in the long jump, cranking out a career-best leap of 21-2 that was good for 11
th place on Friday and ranks third on the MIAA indoor performance list. Junior
Luke Nguyen (Houston, Tx./Carl Wunsche Sr.) was 14
th with a jump of 20-11 ¾ that ranks fourth in the MIAA while junior
Connor Johnson (Kingsley, Mich./Kingsley HS) was 19
th in a jump of 20-9 that ranks fifth on the MIAA indoor list. Senior
Devon Heckathorn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) was 23
rd (19-9 ¾).
Nguyen was ninth in the triple jump (43-4 ¼) with freshman
Alex Guidry (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Creek HS) placing 10
th (42-4). Nguyen and Guidry sit 1-2 in the MIAA triple jump rankings.
In the weight throw, junior
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West HS) took second in the weight throw with a career-best throw of 54-1 that ranks 51
st on the NCAA III performance list and second on the MIAA list. Freshman
Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield HS) was 11
th with a personal-best throw of 46-4 ¼ that ranks eighth on the MIAA list. Freshman
James McCoy (University City, Mo/Lutheran High School North HS) was 12
th with a personal-best throw of 46-0 ¾ that ranks 10
th on the MIAA list. McCoy also placed fourth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 47-3 that ranks third in the MIAA.
On the track, Calvin senior
Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) made his season indoor debut, taking 31
st in the 60 meter dash (7.21) and 23
rd in the 200 meter dash (22.59). His time in the 200 meters ranks seconds in the MIAA.
In the 3,000 meters, sophomore
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) produced a career-best time of 8:45.70 that was good for 27
th place and ranks second on the MIAA indoor list. Senior
Thaine Nederveld (Columbus, Oh./Columbus Alternative School) was 30
th in a time of 8:49.21 that ranks third in the MIAA. Freshman
Caden Guffey (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East HS) was 46
th in 9:00.91 with his time ranking seventh on the MIAA indoor list.
In the 800 meters, freshman
Cody Aardsma (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian HS) was 23
rd in 1:58.60. His time ranks second in the MIAA. Freshman
Jonas Church (Wabash, Ind./Wabash HS) was 27
th in 1:59.64 with his time ranking fourth on the MIAA list.
Sophomore
Will Richardson (Stockton, Md./Snow Hill HS) clocked a time of 9.47 in the 60 meter hurdles and 53.46 in the 400 meter dash. Freshman
Nolan Viviano (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower HS) clocked a time of 9.35 in the 60 meter hurdles. Â
