STURTEVANT, Wis. – The Calvin University men's golf team finished day one of the two-day Carthage Firebirds Fall Classic in a tie for 10th place on Monday at Ives Grove Golf Links.
Calvin was among the later teams to tee off during the opening day of the tournament and finished with a final team score of 308 strokes to tie St. Norbert College and the Carthage College 'B' team for 10th place among the 19 teams at the event.
The top performer on the day was
Ian Tuin (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian), who made the most of his first ever competitive collegiate round (playing individually) with a score of 73 to tie for 15th place out of 107 golfers after one day.
Jack Marzolino (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) was the top Calvin scorer in team competition with a two-over par 74, tying him for 19th place on the leaderboard.
Matt Turcotte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) tied for 46th place after carding a round of 77, while
Ethan Tiller (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central) and
Josiah McClelland (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) followed with rounds of 78 and 79, respectively, to round out the top four.
Ford Erickson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) shot 80 as the fifth golfer for the Knights.
Entering day two, Illinois Wesleyan University is in first place with a team score of 286, followed by Aurora University (287) and Carthage College (291) in the top three.
