The Calvin University men's golf program lost one its most notable Knights on August 19 when former team captain Mark Van Stee passed away at the age of 47. Van Stee was a three-time First Team All-MIAA honoree with the Calvin men's golf program from 1996-to-1999. He held the Calvin men's golf second-best single-season scoring average mark for several years while playing at the No. 1 lineup spot all four years of his career. He served as a team captain in 1998 and 1999. He graduated from Calvin in 2001 with a degree in history, mathematics and secondary education. After graduation, he continued into an influential teaching, coaching and administrative career that included two years at Escondido Calvin Christian High School (Ca.) and more than 20 years (2003-to-2025) at South Christian High School in the Grand Rapids area.
"Mark Van Stee left an indelible mark on the Calvin men's golf program," said former Calvin head men's golf coach Dr. Jim Timmer Sr. who served as Van Stee's head golf coach at Calvin. "He was a terrific golfer that was highly respected in our league. Moreover, he was a fantastic team captain, leader and human being. He will be greatly missed but we rejoice in his eternal salvation through his faith in Jesus Christ. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family as well as the many communities that knew him so well."
