Spencer Fredrick Resigns as Calvin Men's Volleyball Head Coach

Spencer Fredrick has resigned as Calvin University head men's volleyball coach.

Fredrick has elected to pursue new career opportunities after playing a pivotal role in launching the Calvin men's volleyball program.

Fredrick arrived at Calvin in 2023, a few months after the university announced the addition of men's volleyball as a varsity program. He led the Knights through their first two varsity campaigns in 2024 and 2025.

A native of Southern California, Fredrick played Division I volleyball at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) before continuing a professional volleyball career in Europe. After concluding his time in Europe, he accepted the position as Calvin head men's volleyball coach.

"I want to sincerely thank Calvin for the opportunity to start this program and lead it from the ground up," said Fredrick. "As a young coach coming in with collegiate and professional playing experience — and only a bit of high school coaching under my belt — the chance to take on a head coaching role at this level meant a great deal. It gave me the platform to grow, learn, and come into my own as a coach, and for that, I'll always be grateful."

Calvin Director of Athletics Dr. Jim Timmer thanked Fredrick for his service.

"We are very grateful for the work that Spencer has put in to build the foundations of our men's volleyball program," said Timmer. "We are sad to see him go as he has been a highly valued member of our athletics department. We wish him the very best in his new career pursuits."

According to Timmer, Calvin is in the process of evaluating its search for a new head coach for its men's volleyball program.
