Calvin University men's tennis players
Rodrigo Alipio and
Caleb Bartels received All-MIAA recognition on Thursday as part of the conference's postseason awards announcement.
Â
Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) was named All-MIAA First Team, while Bartels (Belton, Mo./Kansas City Christian) earned All-MIAA Second Team honors.
Â
The two players earned that recognition following a regular season in which the Knights finished 11-8 with a 5-2 MIAA record, good for third place in the final MIAA standings.
Â
After defeating Alma College in the first round of the MIAA Tournament, the Knights will face second-seeded Hope College today (May 1) in the semifinal round of the conference tournament.
Â
Alipio earned his first All-MIAA recognition this season as a sophomore following a stellar campaign at the top of the Calvin line-up in both singles and doubles. In singles competition, Alipio was 16-2 overall and 6-1 in MIAA play in the number-one spot.
Â
In doubles, Alipio finished 13-6 with a 6-1 record in league play. He was also named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on five separate occasions.
Â
Bartels earned All-MIAA recognition thanks to a strong freshman season. In just his first season, Bartels was 10-9 in singles play, primarily playing out of the number-two spot, and went 5-2 in conference play.
Â
In doubles, Bartels finished the season 5-0 overall and 4-0 in league play as part of either the number two or three teams.
