Calvin Women's Lacrosse Betters Kalamazoo In Double Overtime Thriller

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team traveled to take on the Hornets of Kalamazoo where they persevered to pick up a come from behind victory in double overtime. After today Calvin improved to an 8-3 overall record and 2-0 in MIAA play while Kalamazoo fell to 2-9 overall and 1-1 in the conference. 
 
Junior Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) got things started for the Knights in the first quarter as she scored just thirty seconds into play. After that, Kalamazoo scored five straight goals before senior Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) found freshman Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) for another Calvin goal. While Johnson recorded one more goal before the end of the quarter so did the Hornets as Calvin trailed 3-6
 
After that the teams battled for momentum as they both scored two goals in the second quarter before matching each other with three goals apiece in the third. 
 
Heading into the fourth quarter trailing by three the Knights started to make their comeback when junior Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead down to one. Less than a minute later Chang got in on the scoring action before Booher recorded her sixth goal of the game and Calvin took a 12-11 lead. 
 
However, Kalamazoo refused to quit as the teams' traded goals down the stretch and by the end of regulation things were deadlocked at 14-14. In the first overtime period no team was able to break through and they headed into the second. Finally, the Knights powered forward and broke through the Hornets defenses as Bethard sent the ball past the Kalamazoo goalkeeper to give Calvin the 15-14 victory.
 
Booher finished the game with a team high six goals while Chang and Johnson each notched three. Chang recorded an impressive five assists while also grabbing ten draw controls and six ground balls. In goal, sophomore Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) recorded four saves.
 
COACHES COMMENTS: "This was a gritty win for us," said head coach Blake Boehm. "We had a slow start and several self-inflicted mistakes in the first half. The team stepped up and battled through the adversity. Overtime was a thriller with both teams earning possessions. We missed some early shots, but our defense held strong and gave us a 2nd chance in double OT."
 
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, April 8th when they travel to take on Albion at 7PM.
