Calvin Takes 11th at NCAA III Championships Behind Bajwa National Runner--Up Berth

RESULTS

GREENSBORO, NC – Calvin finished 11th in the final team standings at the NCAA III Championships with a final team score of 124.5 points. Calvin finished a half-point out of a top-10 national team finish in the final standings.

The Knights scored in three events on Saturday led by senior David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School) who posted his second national runner-up berth of the meet, doing so in the 100 freestyle, while also leading Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team to a third place finish.

In the morning prelims, Bajwa took second in a time of 43.62 while junior Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) earned a spot in the evening consolation finals by placing 12th in a time of 44.34.

Bajwa then powered his way to a second place finish in the championship finals with a school-record time of 43.25, breaking his own previous school record of 43.56. Platt placed 14th in 44.67 to earn Second Team All-America accolades. Bajwa's second place swim joined his second place finish in the 100 butterfly Thursday night. It also marked his third individual All-America race of the meet as he also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle on Wednesday.

In the championship finals of the 400 freestyle relay, Bajwa, senior Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS), senior Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) and Platt took third in 2:56.86, just missing their own school record in the race. The third place finish is the highest finish by the Calvin men in the 400 freestyle relay. It is also the fourth straight year Calvin has posted a top-eight finish in the race.

"I'm proud of this group for a strong final day of competition and making a run at the top 10 in the team standings," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "David had an amazing final night as a collegiate swimmer. What a career he has had. He is one of the most improved swimmers I have seen in my coaching career. It was a thrill to watch him compete and improve the way he did as a swimmer."
