RESULTS
GREENSBORO, NC – Calvin rode through choppy waters on Friday at the NCAA III Championships to score nine points and remain within striking distance of a top-10 national finish.
Calvin scored in one event on Friday, the 100 backstroke. Junior
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) won the consolation final with a ninth place (overall) time of 47.90 that was good for Second Team All-America honors. Platt placed 13
th in the morning prelims in 48.39 and then dropped nearly a half-second to move up four places in the evening consolation finals.
His finish gave Calvin nine points and an overall total of 97 points that is good for 11
th place in the overall team standings, heading into the final day of competition.
Calvin lost out on point production in the morning prelims as its third-seeded 200 medley relay team was disqualified for an early exchange. Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team also just missed out on scoring as its placed 17
th in a time of 6:45.36.
Also competing in the morning prelims were juniors
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School) and
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) in the 100 breaststroke. Gemmen had a season-best time of 55.0 that was good for 22
nd place while Hays had a season-best time of 55.38 that was good for 27
th place.
COACHES COMMENT: "Definitely an up-and-down day but we put some more points on the board and have a shot at another top 10 finish," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "I'm proud of this group for weathering some adversity and competing through it. We have a chance to finish strong tomorrow and our focus is doing just that."
Scheduled to compete for the Calvin men on Saturday are senior
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School), Platt and senior
Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) in the 100 freestyle. The trio will join senior
Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS) in the 400 freestyle relay.
