Calvin Men's Track and Field Has Big Opening Weekend at GVSU Holiday Open

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin men's indoor track and field team had a big day at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Friday.

Freshman Gabe Van Goor (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS) highlighted the day by setting a school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.07 in the prelims that ended up good for 21st place in a field of Division I, II and NAIA competitors. It broke the previous record of 7.09 set by his teammate Koby Vander Woude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) last year.

Van Goor was part of a 1-2 punch for Calvin in the 60 meter dash as junior Bob Horton (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) was 28th with a career-best time of 7.13.

Calvin also showed depth in the 400 meters with sophomore Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich./Traverse City West) taking 10th in 49.78 while Horton was 14th (50.21), senior Connor Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) 17th (50.38), senior Danny Andringa (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) 26th (51.86) and freshman Nolan Viviano (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower HS) 29th (52.11).

In the 800 meters, freshman Jackson Meyers (Grand Haven, Mich./Allendale HS) was 21st (1:59.24).

Habers, Lubberts, Horton and Andringa formed a strong 4x400 meter relay and placed fourth with a time of 3:21.33.

Junior Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) had a career-best time of 8.48 in placing 17th in the 60 meter hurdles. Sophomore Rhys Bedford (Delton, MIch. Delton Kellogg Delton, MIch./Delton Kellogg) was 19th in a career-best time of 8.53.  

Van Baren and Bedford were also a part of a power-packed Calvin crew in the field events.

Bedford took 16th in the long jump (20-5). Van Baren led Calvin's shot put contingent, placing 14th with a throw of 43-9 3/4. Freshman James McCoy was close behind in 15th (43-8).

In the weight throw, sophomore Carson Arnould () was 18th (46- 1 ½), McCoy 23rd (43-7 ¾), freshman Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich. Pennfield Senior) 25th (42-9 ½), sophomore Benjamin Ernstes (Kalamazoo, Mich./Otsego HS) 25th (39-5) and senior Samuel Lamsma (Lakewood, Colo./Denver Christian) 27th (37-5).

Junior Luke Nguyen (Houston, Texas Carl Wunsche Sr.) had a big season opener, placing sixth in the triple jump (44-4 ¼). Sophomore Connor Johnson (Kingsley, Mich./Kingsley) was eighth (42-0 ½), freshman Alex Guidry (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Creek HS) 11th (40-10 ¼), junior Aidan Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) 12th (40-2 ¼) and senior Devon Heckathorn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) 14th (37-5 ¾).

Freshman Sam Abdalla (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) led the charge in the high jump, placing 11th (6-5 ½) with sophomore Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 16th (6-3 ½) and freshman Erik Barancik (Montrose, Mich./Chesaning 19th (6-1 ½).

Calvin had a solid showing in the pole vault with freshman Zach Hartemink (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 14th (13-9 ¼) and freshman Pinehas House (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) 19th (12-3 ½).
