DAY ONE FINALS RESULTS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team had a strong opening day of competition at its own Calvin Winter Invitational.
Competing in a field of ranked NCAA Division II teams, Calvin produced four NCAA B' cut qualifying times and recorded several season-best marks.
Calvin opened Thursday's finals with a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay behind the team of senior
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North HS), senior
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS) and freshmen
Jackson Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) and
Kellen Morford (Medina, Oh./Medina HS). Platt opened the relay with a 50 free split of 19.98 that was a season-best and NCAA B' cut qualifying time. The relay took fourth in a season-best and NCAA B' cut qualifying time of 1:21.21. Calvin's B' relay team of junior

Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville) led the way, placing eighth in the championship finals with a time of 4:34.37. Freshman

Cardin Nguyen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) 16
th (1:56.74).
Platt led the 50 freestyle charge, winning the consolation final in a time of 20.06 while Logan was 15
th (21.13) and Morford 16
th (21.15).
Calvin capped off the night with a sterling effort in the 400 medley relay as the team of Merkel, senior
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School) freshman
David Gabrielle (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Platt took third with a season-best and NCAA B' cut qualifying time of 3:14.87. Merkel led off the relay with a 100 backstroke split in an NCAA B' cut qualifying time of 47.72. Platt closed the race off with a sizzling 100 freestyle split of 42.65.
Through one day of competition, Calvin sits in fourth place with a team score of 392.5 points.
COACHES COMMENT: "I thought we came out a bit slow this morning. I told our team after the morning session that I would have given them a B- for a grade," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We have had some A+ efforts this fall so I challenged them to raise their letter grade and they responded in a big way tonight."
NEXT UP: Action continues on Friday with prelims set for 10 a.m. and evening finals at 6 p.m.
