GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 17th-ranked Calvin University men's swimming and diving team finished off a strong weekend at Venema Aquatic Center with a first-place finish in the Calvin Quad Meet on Saturday.
After two sessions on Saturday to complete the meet, Calvin finished with 1,630 total points. Ohio Northern University (719 points) took second, followed by Carthage College (548) and Albion College (265).
The 200 Medley Relay led off the morning session, with he 'A' Calvin relay of
Jackson Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville),
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Ohio/Homeschool),
David Gabrielle (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) taking first place in a time of 1:30.13 that ranks third in NCAA III this season. The 'B' relay of
Logan McKinney (Jackson, Mich./Jackson),
Cardin Nguyen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain),
Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg),
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) took second place in 1:34.17.
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville) helped Calvin get off to a strong start in individual events with a first-place finish in the 400 IM in a time of 4:09.99.
Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) took second, followed by
Evan Haney (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) in third and
John Reeder (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) in fifth.
Calvin had four of the top five in the 100 Butterfly, led by Gabrielle in first place in a time of 50.71. Taulbee took second in 51.68.
Benjamin Wichart (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) finished fourth and
Jake Schotanus (Versaille, Ky./Woodford County) took fifth.
Carter Detweiler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Council Rock North/Ohio Northern University) won the 200 Freestyle in 1:44.61.
Luca Zdravkov (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North),
Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and
Kyle Chakery (Grand Prairie, Texas/Arlington) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Gemme led the 100 Breaststroke with a first-place time of 57.54, just edging out Nguyen who finished second in 57.60.
Alex Ketrow (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington) took fourth, followed by
Josh Krampe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) in fifth.
The 100 Backstroke featured the two swimmers with the top two times in NCAA III this season, with Platt (49.24) edging out Merkel (49.35) for first place and setting an NCAA 'B' cut qualifying time. Gabrille and McKinney followed in third and fifth, respectively.
The morning session in the pool ended with the 'A' 800 Freestyle Relay of Halberg, Haney, Ziegler and Detweiler winning in a time of 7:02.45 that ranks third in NCAA III this season.
In diving competition in the morning session,
Miles Lee (Chicago, Ill./Homeschool) was the top Calvin diver in the three-meter competition in sixth place with 1:44.15.
The 1650 Freestyle led off the evening session and Halberg posted another first-place finish. His winning time of 16:24.35 ranks fifth in NCAA III this season. Haney took second, followed by
Alex Bergsma (Carmel, Ind./Carmel/Wheaton College) in third and Stimpert in fourth.
Merkel scored a first-place finish in the 200 Backstroke, winning with a time of 1:49.92. McKinney followed in second.
Mace Boender (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Carson McIntire (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Platt posted a dominant win in the 100 Freestyle in 44.49, topping
Will Bales (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Everett) in second by nearly 2.5 seconds. Logan took third and Zdravkov finished fifth.
The Knights recorded the top six finishers in the 200 Breaststroke, led by Nguyen in first place in a time of 2:08.23. Gemmen, Taulbee, Krampe and Ketrow rounded out the top five.
The final event of the day was the 200 Butterfly, where Ziegler won in a time of 1:56.12. Chakery (1:58.22) and Wichart (1:59.22) rounded out the top three.
NEXT UP: Calvin swimming and diving will return to action on Saturday, November 8, when it competes at Wheaton College (Ill.) in a dual meet starting at 1:00 PM (CT).
