Results
The Calvin University women's tennis team finished a strong weekend showing at the Hope Tournament with three first-place finishes between the singles and doubles competitions.
The event started Friday at Holland High School with five separate brackets of 16 players across flights A-E. The matches progressed in a tournament style, with one set scored to eight with a tiebreaker, while the final round was played like normal.
On Saturday, the team returned to Hope College for three doubles draws, played in the same tournament style.
Calvin came away from Friday's singles competition with two first-place finishes, as well as two other runner-up performances.
Freshman
Ana Clara Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) advanced to the final round against teammate and fellow freshman
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) in the 'C' draw, with Ornellas taking home the 7-5 and 6-2 win in the finals to win the draw.
The other Calvin singles win came in the 'E' draw, as
Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) won 7-5 and 6-3 in the final.
In the 'D' draw,
Julia Hooker (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) advanced to the final before falling in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) to take second.
On Saturday, the doubles team of
Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) and
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) won the 'C' draw as it lost only five points in their three matches, including a 6-0 win in the final round.
The team of
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and
Elise Norman (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) won two matches before losing their semi-final match.
Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, September 21, when it hosts Roosevelt at 2:30 PM.
