Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team suffered a close 4-3 defeat in its season-opening match at Davenport University on Wednesday night.
 
The Knights won the number-three doubles match, as the team of 
Julia Hooker (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and 
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 6-1.
 
The Panthers would secure the one overall doubles point by taking the other two matches, however, by the scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
 
In singles action, Calvin (0-1) did well in the bottom half of the line-up with wins at the numbers four, five and six slots in the line-up.
 
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) won in a third-set tiebreaker (3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9)) in the fourth spot, while 
Ana Clara Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) won in straight sets 6-2 and 6-0 in the fifth spot. 
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) also won in three sets (7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4)) in the sixth spot.
 
Davenport (1-0) was able to secure the overall win thanks to straight sets wins in each of the top three spots, however. 
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) fell 6-3 and 6-0 in the top spot, followed by a 6-0 and 6-0 defeat for 
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) in the second spot. 
Marina Ribeiro (Santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) lost 6-2 and 6-4 in the number-three position.
 
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Friday, September 13, when it starts the two-day tournament at Hope College at 8:00 AM.
