NCAA III MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING DAY TWO RESULTS
GREENSBORO, NC – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team had a big second day at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships, collecting four All-America berths and 78 points to move into sixth place in the overall team standings with 108 points.
Graduate student
Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the way with a second place finish in the 100 butterfly with a school-record time of 46.44, breaking his previous school mark of 46.85 set this past December. Camy made a serious bid for the national title but was out-touched at the wall by University of Chicago swimmer Jesse Ssengonzi with Ssengonzi clocking in at 46.28. The times by Ssengonzi and Camy both surpassed the previous NCAA III record of 46.47 set by Ssengonzi last year at the national meet. Camy entered Thursday's championship finals seeded fifth after recording a time of 47.35 in the morning prelims.
The finish by Camy is Calvin's highest-ever individual finish in the 100 butterfly. He was part of two individuals to score in the race as senior teammate
Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) took 10
th in the consolation finals with a time of 48.14. The finish was good for Division III Second Team All-America honors for Peterson and marked the first individual All-America finish of his Calvin career.
Calvin opened the meet with an All-America swim in the 200 freestyle relay as the quartet of junior
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School), Peterson, sophomore
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) and senior
Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took seventh with a season-best time of 1:20.48. It marked the third straight year Calvin has claimed All-America honors in the race.
Calvin then delivered an All-America swim and a school record in the 400 medley relay as the squad of Bajwa, sophomore
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School), Camy and Platt took fourth with a time of 3:12.83. Â The time broke the previous Calvin record of 3:13.40 set earlier this season. It also marked Calvin's highest finish in the race at the national meet.
In the morning prelims, graduate student
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Oh./Brecksville-Broadview HS) was 18
th in the 400 IM (3:57.08) after entering the meet seeded 19
th in the race.
COACHES COMMENT: "Awesome day. So happy for the team," said Calvin head coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We had some historic swims. Julien's race was amazing and I'm so proud of his hard work and dedication coming to fruition. It was also great to see
Forrest Peterson score individually for the first time in his career. Both of our relays stepped up and delivered and
Eric Chimes swam a real strong race in the 400 IM. We have good momentum going and the goal is to keep it going tomorrow."
