Calvin Women's Lacrosse Falls on the Road to Illinois Wesleyan

Box Score

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team traveled to Illinois Wesleyan to take on the Titans. It was a back-and-forth game right until the very end but ultimately the Knights fell 14-12.

The Titans struck first in the first quarter before Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) found Ainsley Gothard (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) to even the score. Just seconds later Illinois Wesleyan once again found the back of the net but the Knights responded quickly when Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) scored off an assist from Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian). Later in the quarter, Kelly Ruha (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsville Armstrong) scored twice for Calvin but the Titans scored three goals of their own to give them the 5-4 lead after the first fifteen minutes.

As the second quarter got underway the Titans scored two goals to extend their lead. Things were quiet for a while as both teams struggled to find holes in the opposing defense but with two minutes left in the half Chang scored her second goal of the game to give the Knights a boost. However, with just ten seconds left in the half Illinois Wesleyan snuck in a goal to head into halftime with the 8-5 lead over Calvin.

Looking to bounce back, the Knights came out hot to start the second half with Booher finding Bethard for a Calvin goal. Booher followed that up with a goal of her own before Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) got in on the scoring action to tie things up at 8-8. Refusing to back down, Illinois Wesleyan went on to score three goals of its own to reclaim the lead. Chang notched a hat trick when she scored with just seconds left in the quarter as Calvin headed into the final quarter of play trailing 11-9.

The battle continued in the fourth quarter when Chang kept things rolling as she found the back of the net twice to even things up. The Titans then scored to go up by one before Booher scored for Calvin with two minutes left to once again make it a tie game at 12-12. As the game clock continued to wind down Illinois Wesleyan came alive and scored two goals to take the lead. With hardly any time left in the game those goals would prove to be the final dagger for the Knights as they fell to the Titans 14-12.

The Knights outshot Illinois Wesleyan 34-21 while also picking up 30 ground balls compared to the Titans 26. Calvin recorded 17-29 draw controls and forced Illinois Wesleyan to make 30 turnovers throughout tonight's match.

Chang finished with a career high of four goals and four ground balls with Ruha and Bethard each recorded two goals. Booher contributed two goals, four assists and four draw controls while freshman Alex Petrusha (Milford, Mich./Milford) had four ground balls. In goal, Margee Boelema (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) notched six saves.

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, March 30th when they travel to Aurora for a 1 p.m. (CST) match up.
