Box Score BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team opened its 2024 season with a 12-4 victory over Madonna University on the campus of Detroit Country Day High School Saturday night.
Calvin led 6-2 at halftime and added three unanswered goals in the third quarter to take firm control of the game.
Junior
Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg HS) notched a hat trick as she scored a goal in the second quarter and a pair in the third to lead the Calvin scoring parade.
Sophomore
Anneliese Hanson (Naperville, Il./) opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the contest off a feed from sophomore
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS). Sophomore
Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wisc./Watertown HS) and senior
Kelly Ruha (New Hope, Mn./Robbinsville Armstrong HS) added goals in the first to help the Knights gain a 3-1 lead.
Madonna (0-1) scored early in the second to make it a 3-2 game but the Knights responded with free position shot goals from graduate student
Lainey Aldridge (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) and freshman
Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) to build a 5-2 lead. Chang then put home her first goal with 59 seconds left in the half to give the Knights a four-goal cushion.
Eenigenburg put in her second goal of the game in the third, sandwiched around the two tallies from Chang.
Ruha scored another in the fourth with freshman Ainsely Gothard and Booher also scoring for the Knights.
Booher finished with a goal and an assist and was credited with 13 draw controls to go with four ground balls. Smith had a goal, an assist and five ground balls. Ruha had two goals and two ground balls. In addition to her three-goal performance, Chang scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls and caused two turnovers. Eenigenburg had two goals and two ground balls. Aldridge had a goal, an assist and three ground balls while also causing two turnovers.
In goal, freshman Hanna Rizzo (Waterville, Oh./Anthony Wayne HS) got her first collegiate start and picked up the win along with five saves.
NEXT UP: Calvin will face Chatham on February 23 on the campus of Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
