Calvin Women's Lacrosse Falls Just Short Against Thiel

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team faced off against the Tomcats of Thiel where they ultimately fell 11-10.

After today's matchup the Knight's moved to a 1-2 record while Thiel, who played their first game of the season today, moved to 1-0.

The Knights struck first when sophomore Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) scored just three minutes into play. One minute later Calvin kept things rolling when Smith found fellow sophomore Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) one minute later for the Knights second goal of the game. Senior Kelly Ruha (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsville Armstrong) also got in on the first period scoring and Booher netted her second goal but after two goals from Thiel the Knights held a 2-4 advantage after the quarter.

In the second quarter the Tomcats found the back of the net to bring themselves within one. Smith quickly retaliated for the Knights before Thiel scored two unanswered goals and the teams went into halftime tied 5-5.

The Tomcats opened the second half scoring two minutes into the third quarter to take their first lead since the opening goal. However, the lead didn't last for long as Booher and Smith each added another goal to their tallies and put the Knights back in front. With just five minutes left in the period Thiel hit back with a goal and once again the teams were all tied up heading into the fourth quarter.

Booher looked to give the Knights the momentum as she scored back to back goals to begin the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for Calvin, the Tomcats did not back down and went on a 4-0 scoring run to take a two point lead over the Knights. With just under four minutes left to play graduate student Lainey Aldridge (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) scored for Calvin but with time running down the comeback fell just short and the Knights fell 11-10.

Calvin outshot Thiel 30-17 with 18 of those shots being on goal. Calvin picked up 19 ground balls compared to Thiel's 11 and won 8 draw controls.

Booher led the attack for the Knights, finishing with five goals and a caused turnover while Smith tallied three goals and one assist. Aldridge and Ruha each finished with one goal with Ruha also leading the team with five ground balls. Freshman Alex Petrusha (Milford, Mich./Milford) and sophomore Morgan Bethard (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsville Armstong) each had three caused turnovers while Bethard also had three ground balls.

UP NEXT: The Knight will be back in action on Saturday, March 2nd when they play their first game of their spring trip against Whittier in California. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. (PT).
