HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team had a strong day three at the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, claiming individual titles in five events while posting three MIAA records and one Calvin record in the process.
Calvin opened the record-breaking night in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of junior
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School), sophomore
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School), senior
Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and senior
Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) took first place with an MIAA-record time of 1:27.95. The time breaks the previous MIAA mark of 1:28.05 set last year.
In the consolation final, Calvin's relay of senior
Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS), senior
Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS) and junior
Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) took first place with a time of 1:31.07.
In the 400 IM, graduate student
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Oh./Brecksville-Broadview HS) took first place with a Calvin and MIAA-record time of 3:56.47, breaking the previous Calvin record of 3:59.25 set by Julian Iturbe in 2020 and the MIAA record of 3:57.14 set by Dan Clyde of Hope in 2019. The time by Chimes is an NCAA B' cut time and ranks 19
th nationally. Senior
Austin Martinson (Aurora, Il./Metea Valley HS) was fifth (4:08.02) and sophomore
Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Oh./St. John's Jesuit) seventh (4:12.14).
Camy then stepped up and smashed the MIAA record in the 100 butterfly, winning the race in a time of 46.87, just missing his own school record of 46.84 set earlier this season. His time shattered the previous MIAA record of 47.40 set by Hope in 2022. Camy led a 1-3-7-8-9 Calvin finish. Peterson was third (48.10), junior
Jazz Widney (Wellsville, NY/Jenks HS) seventh (50.90), Molin eighth (50.97) and Campbell ninth (49.82) with Campbell winning the consolation final.
Calvin then went 1-3-6-8 in the 200 freestyle with sophomore
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) winning the race in a time of 1:38.95 with Seidelman third (1:41.38), junior
Jack Kulaga sixth (1:41.99) and freshman
Ryan Halberg (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) eighth (1:44.37).
In the 100 breaststroke, Gemmen was second (55.34), Hays third (55.81) and junior
Anthony Crudele (Aurora, Il./Home School) fifth (57.63).
Bajwa then won the 100 backstroke with an NCAA B' cut time of 47.69 that ranks seventh nationally and just missed the Calvin and MIAA record of 47.62 set by
Noah Holstege in 2023. Platt was second (48.30) and Martinson eighth (53.01).
Calvin also had a big night on the three-meter diving board with junior
Jason Perez (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell HS) taking second (430.05) and junior
Wil Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) placing third (406.40).
The night of performances gives Calvin a first place total of 751 points, 23 points ahead of Hope heading into the final day of competition.
COACHES COMMENT: "Really proud of our guys tonight," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We had some great performances. Records in the pool and big performances on the diving board. Our goal is to continue to have fun, compete free and easy and enjoy our time together as a team tomorrow."
NEXT UP: Calvin is scheduled to compete on the final day of competition on Saturday with morning prelims set for 10 a.m. and evening finals set for 5 p.m.
