Calvin Men's Track and Field Has Record-Breaking Day at GVSU Big Meet

RESULTS

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin men's track and field team had a record-breaking day at the GVSU Big Meet on Saturday.

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of senior Corbin DeBoer (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS), sophomore Connor Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS), freshman Mason Schimmel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) and junior Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) shattered a school record by more than four seconds, finishing in a time of 3:18.31. The time was good for first place in the heat and second place overall in the race. It broke the previous school record of 3:22.54 set in 2017. DeBoer opened the race with an opening split of 49.5 and closed the relay with a blazing final leg split of 47.3.

VanderWoude had a busy and productive afternoon. He produced a personal-best time of 7.21 in the 60 meter dash and later finished seventh in the 400 meters with an indoor personal-best time of 49.15.

Calvin had a good day in the distances. Junior Nicholas Henz (Oswego, Il./Oswego East HS) had a personal-best time of 8:38.53. Sophomore Garrett Mowry (Carmel, Ind./Westfield HS) did the same in the race, producing a personal-best time of 9:05.75.

In the mile run, freshman Noah Laslo (Oak Brook, Il./Timothy Christian HS) clocked a personal-best time of 4:26.54 as did sophomore Brady Vroom (Cedar Lake, Ind./Illiana Christian HS) in a time of 4:32.85 and freshman Justice Shaffer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home School) in a time of 4:39.43.

Freshman Lucas Vander Griend (Grand Rapids, Mich./The Potters House) had a person-best time of 9.69 in the 60 meter hurdles. Freshman Aiden Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was 11th (39-8 ¾) while freshman Luke Nguyen (Houston, Texas Carl Wunsche) was 13th (39-6 ½).

In the weight throw, senior Matthew Toldy (Huron, Oh./Huron HS) was 26th (43-10).

COACHES COMMENT: "The great performances continued today at the GVSU Big Meet!" said Calvin head track and field coach Adam Haldorson. "We had a ton of huge marks across all event areas with the biggest performance coming in the 4x400 relay. That puts that group in a high national ranking and provided a huge jolt of energy for the guys and our team. Overall a great weekend and confidence booster for our program. It was the perfect tune-up for the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in two weeks."

NEXT UP: Calvin returns to action next Friday at the GVSU Tune-Up Invitational.
