GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team had a record-setting Saturday on day three of the Calvin Winter Invitational.

The Calvin 400 freestyle relay team of senior David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School), senior Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS), senior Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) and junior Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill. Downers Grove North) took second with a school-record time of 2:56.79. The time broke the previous record of 2:57.46 set last spring at the 2024 NCAA III Championships. Calvin's record-time on Saturday ranks third in Division III this season. Bajwa led off the relay with a 100 free split of 43.81, just missing the school record of 43.80 set by Julian Iturbe in 2021. The 100 free time by Bajwa is the top time in Division III this season.

Calvin's B' relay of junior Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS), senior Jack Kulaga (Downers Grove, Ill. Downers Grove South), sophomore Will Bales (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Everett HS) and senior Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took  seventh in 3:06.43.

The Knights opened the afternoon and later the evening session with the arduous 1650 freestyle. Sophomore Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) was fifth (16:30.80), sophomore Andrew Stimpert (Normal, IL Normal West) 10^th (16:59.59), freshman John Reeder (Colorado Springs, Colo. The Classical Academy) 12^th (17:08.15) and junior Henry Phippen (Macomb, Ill. Phippen Academy) 14^th (17:34.91).

Junior Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Ohio St. John's Jesuit) was Calvin's top finisher in the 200 backstroke, placing seventh (1:52.13). Freshman Logan McKinney (Jackson, Mich./Jackson HS) was 11^th (1:57.32), freshman Carson McIntire (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) 13^th (1:59.71) and sophomore Peter Crudele (Aurora, Ill. Crudele Academy Homeschool) 18^th (2:09.84).

In the 100 freestyle, Platt was fourth (44.20), Molin 11^th (45.59), Seidelman 12^th (45.60), Zach Logan 18^th (46.59), Kulaga 19^th (46.82) and Balles 23^rd (47.34).

Junior Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, OH/Home School) led the charge in the 200 breaststroke, taking fifth in a season-best time of 2:03.01 with senior Anthony Crudele (Aurora, Ill./Homeschool) seventh (2:07.98), freshman Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Ohio Reynoldsburg) 9^th (2:06.62), sophomore Logan Yakubowski (Hazleton, Pa. Hazleton Area) 10^th (2:06.92), junior Josh Krampe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) 11^th (2:07.44) and freshman Diego Herrera-Mora (Liberty Hill, Tx. CTP de Belen) 13^th (2:09.34).

Junior Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) took sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:52.02). In the morning prelims, he clocked a season-best time of 1:50.67.  Junior Jake Schotanus (Versaille, Ky. Woodford County) was 11^th (1:57.41), sophomore Benjamin Wichhart (Lockport, N.Y. Starpoint) 12^th (2:00.14), senior Ethan Wayne (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) 13^th (2:01.01) and freshman John Reeder (Colorado Springs, Colo. The Classical Academy) 15^th (2:04.26).

In the one-meter diving competition, senior Wil Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) was fourth (435.75).

COACHES COMMENT: "We had a really strong day of competition," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We had some big swims at the top but also several strong performances down through our lineup. I was very pleased with the energy we closed the meet out with. This is a competition we can build on and use for the rest of the season. Now it's time to get ready for first semester exams, recharge and then refocus for the second half of the year."
