The Calvin men's soccer team will face Trine University in the MIAA Tournament Championship final Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Trine's Shive Field.
The two teams met earlier this fall at Trine with the Thunder winning 2-0 in a game played on October 12. Tickets for the game can be purchased through the MIAA website at:

IN THE MIAA TOURNAMENT – Calvin is making its 12
th appearance in the MIAA Tournament Championship final. The Knights are 8-0-3 all-time in MIAA Tournament finals, losing a shootout to Hope in 2013, winning a shootout over Kalamazoo in 2014 and another shootout over Hope in 2019. The shootout contests went into the final standing as ties. Calvin is 1-1-0 against Trine in MIAA Tournament play, defeating the Thunder 5-1 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals in 2017 and falling 1-0 in overtime in the 2021 (fall) MIAA Tournament semifinals. Both prior meetings were played at Calvin.
EARLIER THIS YEAR – Trine defeated Calvin 2-0 on October 12 at Trine's Weaver Field. Calvin outshot Trine 12-7 but Trine's Ben Borak scored just 3:06 into the match with Ryan Cote adding an insurance goal for the Thunder with 7:57 left in regulation.
ABOUT CALVIN – Calvin comes into the match with a 13-5-2 overall record. Calvin finished third in the MIAA standings with a 4-1-2 conference mark this fall. Calvin will carry a seven-game unbeaten streak into Saturday's game, having gone 6-0-1 over its last seven including a 2-1 win over rival Hope Tuesday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. Senior

Colin Nieuwenhuis scored the game-winner with 12:26 left in regulation to break a 1-1 deadlock. The Knights are 8-1-2 over their last 11 games with their last loss – their 2-0 defeat at Trine October 12.  The Knights have featured a balanced scoring attack with 12 different individuals netting at least one goal this season. Alex White leads Calvin in scoring with 22 goal contributions notching 16 goals, six assists and 38 points. He has four game-winning goals on the season FreshmanÂ
Colin Nieuwenhuis is next on the Calvin score sheet with 14 points on the strength of six goals and two assists. He has three game-winning goals on the season. Freshman
Xtreme Hauk is close behind with five goals, three assists and 13 points. Sophomore
Quinten Latchett has been a key sub off the bench with five goals, one assist and 11 points. Senior centerbackÂ
Jacob Goodling has been a key on defense and offense. He has four goals on the year including a game-winning goal in the closing minutes of a 3-2 win over the University of Chicago on October 2. Calvin's goalkeeping has been split between seniorsÂ
Kaelen Matascastillo and Jacob Moore. Matascastillo has 43 saves and a goals-against-average of 1.59. Moore has a 0.72 goals-against-average and 21 saves.
THE CALVIN COACH – Calvin is led by head men's soccer coachÂ
Ryan Souders who is in his 13
th season at the helm of the Knights. Souders is a 2007 graduate of Wheaton College. At Wheaton he was the starting goalkeeper on a Thunder side that reached the Division III National Championship final in 2006. He is 233-35-15 in 13 years at Calvin and has led the Knights to 12 MIAA regular season championships. He led Calvin to the national championship final in 2016 and 2018 and to NCAA III Final Fours in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019.
POST-SEASON AWARDS – Calvin landed five individuals on the All-MIAA teams released earlier this week. Hauk, White, Goodling and freshman outside back
Jake Ziolo were all named to the All-MIAA First Team while senior midfielder
Nick Augustyn was named to the All-MIAA Second Team. In addition, Hauk was named the MIAA's Newcomer of the Year while senior centerback Reed Vanderlugt was named the recipient of the MIAA's. Dr. Marvin A. Zuidema Award – given to a senior who displays contributions to team play, leadership qualities, demonstration of ethical virtues and excellence in both athletics and academics.
ABOUT TRINE – Trine enters Saturday's match with an overall record of 7-6-3. The Thunder picked up their first-ever MIAA regular season title last week, sharing the final league crown with Hope at 5-0-2 in league play. Trine is seeking to win its second MIAA Tournament title in four years. The Thunder were tournament champions in 2021, defeating Albion, Calvin and Kalamazoo in succession on the way to their first NCAA III Tournament bid. Trine has an eight-game unbeaten streak, going 5-0-3 over their last eight games. Trine has tied each of its last three opponents including a 1-1 draw with Albion in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Tuesday night with the Thunder winning the penalty kick shootout 6-5. Trine is led in scoring by Braden Estep who has 10 points on the strength of four goals and two assists. Luke Kearns has two goals, five assists and nine points while Djimo Kouyate has four goals and eight points. Trine has had nine different individuals score a goal this season. Aidan McGonagle has been the primary goalkeeper for the Thunder, recording 35 saves along with a 1.25 goals-against-average.
POST-SEASON AWARDS – Trine landed six individuals on the All-MIAA team. Defenders Luke Kearns and Jarick Aguilar were named to the All-MIAA First Team. McGonagle, Estep, Ryan Cote and Gavin Hardy were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
THE TRINE COACH – Trine is led by interim head coach Mike Avery who also serves as sporting director and head coach of Fort Wayne FC. He was named interim head coach this August. He previously served as head coach of Valparaiso University (Ind.).
