KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA D1 hockey team defeated the Western Michigan University Stallions 3-2 in overtime late Monday night. The contest had originally been scheduled for last Friday but was moved to Monday evening due to wintry weather conditions throughout southwest Michigan.
Ranked 12
th nationally, Calvin fell behind 1-0 early in the second period but came back to take a 2-1 lead on second period goals from freshman
Noah Kramps and sophomore
Steven Ickes.
Calvin pushed to extend its lead in the third, controlling the puck and firing several shots at goal but the Western Michigan defense was stingy, blocking several shots while Stallion goaltender John Moriarity came up with several strong saves.
A Calvin cross checking penalty with six minutes left granted Western Michigan a power play opportunity. Late in the man advantage, the Stallions tied the game 2-2 as a pass from behind the net found an attacker in the slot who fired home a shot with 4:30 left in regulation.
Calvin pressed for the go-ahead goal but Western blocked a flurry of shots inside the final minute of regulation, sending the contest into overtime.
With a 3-on-3 overtime, Western Michigan took the opening faceoff into the Calvin zone but freshman
Nick Justice was able to corral the puck and set up behind his own net.
Using a full head of steam and a pick from a teammate at the blue line, Justice rolled through the left wing and flipped a back-hand shot from just outside the crease that eluded Moriarity and found the back of the net just 39 seconds into overtime for the game-winner.
Calvin finished the game with a 46-34 shots on goal advantage. Moriarity had 43 saves for the Stallions. Freshman
Adam Yost had 32 saves in goal for Calvin.
COACHES COMMENT: "Real tough win tonight," said Calvin head coach
Mike Petrusma. "Credit Western Michigan for playing a tough hard-nosed style of game. They blocked a lot of shots and their goalie helped keep them in the game. Credit our guys for hanging in there and finding a way to win at the end."
