RESULTS
GROVE CITY, Pa.- The No. 8 Calvin men's swimming and diving team rolled to a 189-99 dual meet victory at Grove City College Friday night. The Knights are now 4-2 in dual meet competition.
Friday's meet marked Calvin's first dual meet of the 2024 calendar and its first competition since a week of post-Christmas training in Florida.
Senior
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Oh./Brecksville-Broadview HS) led the way as a triple-winner, taking first place in the 1,000 freestyle (10:11.16), 100 butterfly (51.59) and 100 IM (54.12).
Junior
Will Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) was a double-winner, taking first place on both diving boards. Goodpaster led a one-two sweep on the three-meter board with a first place score of 245.80 with junior
Jason Perez (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell HS) taking second (214.95). Goodpaster posted a season-best score of 293.35 in winning the one-meter board with Perez second (215.30).
Sophomore
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) was a double-winner in the swim events, taking the 50 backstroke (23.86) and 100 breaststroke (58.28).
Other individual winners included sophomore
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School) in the 50 breaststroke (26.94), senior
Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) in the 50 freestyle (21.39) and sophomore
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) in the 500 freestyle (4:52.24).
Calvin swept both relays with its 200 medley relay team of junior
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School), Platt, senior
Austin Martinson (Aurora, Il./Metea Valley HS) and
Addison Van Soelen (Lawrenceville, Ga./Providence Christian Academy) winning in a time of 1:34.60. Its 200 freestyle relay team of Peterson, sophomore
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS), Martinson and freshman Van Soelen won in a time of 1:26.18.
COACHES COMMENT: "It felt good to get back to some racing again," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We are finishing up a big two-week stretch of training and traveling. We are finishing it by taking part in the maybe the biggest Division III meet (tomorrow) all year. Are working on finishing this trip with a bang before we add our second semester classes to the mix beginning next week."
NEXT UP: Calvin travels to Pittsburgh on Saturday for a heavy-duty quadrangular that will include No. 6 Denison, No. 9 Carnegie Mellon, Calvin and No. 12 Johns Hopkins.
