ANN ARBOR, Mch. - The Calvin University men's swimming and diving team opened its season at the Be Better; Invitational on Friday night at University of Michigan.
The event featured Michigan, Calvin and Hope College and was the second annual event to celebrate the life of former University of Michigan and Holland Christian High School swimmer Ian Miskelley, who passed in 2020. Miskelley was a teammate of members of each of the three competing schools. The meet also shone a spotlight on the Be Better; Foundation, started by the Miskelley family..
The competition included traditional and non-traditional events and was unscored.
In the traditional individual events, Tim Hays (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and
Vlad Molin (Mount Prospect, Ill./Rolling Meadows) each took home third place-finishes in their respective events.
Hays finished third in the 100 individual medley in a time of 52.66, just 0.35 seconds behind the first-place finisher.
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview) followed right behind in fourth place (55.22). Hays also took home fourth place in the 100 backstroke (52.19), with
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School) in fifth place (52.31).
Molin took third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.68, followed by
Corey Campbell (Kentwood, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) in fourth (21.77) and
Addison Van Soelen (Lawrenceville, Ga./Providence Christian Academy) in sixth (22.10).
Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished fifth in the 100 butterfly (51.30), with Chimes coming in sixth (52.38).
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Ohio/Homeschool) also finished fifth in the 100 breastroke (59.23), with
Mohamed Abujiba (Cairo, Egypt/Summits International School) in sixth (1:00.60) and
Anthony Crudele (Aurora, Ill./Homeschool) in seventh (1:01.20) in that event.
In the relay events, Calvin finished second in the 8x25 freestyle (1:18.13). The 200 medley relay team of
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), Gemmen,
Forrest Peterson (Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton) and Campbell finished fourth (1:34.17), as did the 400 freestyle relay team of Platt, Peterson, Molin and Bajwa (3:11.39).
In the one-meter diving competition, Wil Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) finished sixth with 239.15 points, followed by
Edwin Burdalic (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) in seventh with 206.40 points.
COACH'S COMMENT: "It was a great meet to be a part of and raise awareness for mental health," Calvin head swimming and diving coach
Dan Gelderloos said. "To hear the team cheers again and to put some times on the score board again were great for us. It made us excited for the journey ahead and built some confidence in what we have begun to do in practice so far this season."
NEXT UP: Calvin swimming and diving will return to action on Saturday, October 14, when it hosts Grand Valley State.
