Calvin University graduate student
Megan Gilbert was named MIAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt) won the honor after a strong two-way performance in a pair of wins as the Knights defeated Albion (16-12) and Adrian (15-5) to secure a spot in this week's MIAA Tournament.
Best known for her goal scoring abilities, Gilbert caused seven turnovers and added nine ground balls in the two Calvin victories, while also securing 32 draw controls during the week to give the Knights possession.Â
On top of her defensive performance, Gilbert also contributed her normal offensive output, averaging 4.5 points per game with seven goals and two assists.
This season, Gilbert leads the MIAA with 83 points and is tied for the conference lead with 70 goals. Her 288 career points are only five shy of the Calvin all-time career record of 293 (held by Emily Cefaratti), and she already has the program's all-time record for career goals (251).
This is the fourth MIAA Player of the Week honor for Gilbert in her five-year career, but the first time she has been honored for her defense.Â
Gilbert and the Knights will return to action on Wednesday, May 3, when they play in the semi-final round of the MIAA Tournament against top-seeded Hope at 4:00 PM.
