KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin men's track and field team had a big opening day at the Jack Shaw Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University on Friday.
The meet was highlighted by senior
Isaac Jonker (Denver, Co./Denver Christian HS) who won the men's hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 171-10. The throw by Jonker ranks 32
nd in Division III this spring and leads all MIAA throwers.
Senior
John White (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) had a big day, taking second in the javelin with a career-best throw of 47.70 meters (156-6) which leads all MIAA throwers this spring. Sophomore
Philip Bengelink (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) also had a strong day with a personal-best throw of 42.57 meters (139-8), placing him fourth on the MIAA outdoor performance list.
Day two of the competition is scheduled for Saturday with a full slate of events both on the track and in the field.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had some great performances this afternoon in excellent weather," said Calvin head track and field coach Adam Haldorson. "These athletes got the team off to a great start and we are really looking forward to the remainder of the meet tomorrow!"
