AL OWENS CLASSIC RESULTS
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin men's track and field team had several big performances at the Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State University on Friday.
Senior
James Viel (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) led the day by winning the shot put with a throw of 42-3 ½. He was part of a strong contingent of Calvin throwers. In the discus, senior
Misael Martinez Vasquez (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) took fourth (122-1). In the hammer throw, Calvin placed three in the top eight with senior
Isaac Jonker (Denver, Co./Denver Christian HS) taking fourth (167-10), Viel placing seventh (147-8) and Martinez Vasquez taking eighth (144-10).
In the pole vault, sophomore
Wilson Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) took fifth with a vault of 11-3 ¾.
Calvin's distance crew had a strong evening. Junior
Eric Swinson (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern HS) had a second place finish in a career-best time of 9:18.18 that leads the MIAA and sits 24
th on the NCAA III performance list. Sophomore
Nicholas Henz (Oswego, Il./Oswego East HS) was right behind, taking third in a career-best time of 9:20.25 that sits second in the MIAA and 26
th on the NCAA III performance list.
Sophomore
Thaine Nederveld (Columbus, Oh./Columbus Alternative School) took third in the 1500 meters with a career-best time of 3:52.19 that leads the MIAA.
Senior
William Hofmann (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) took fifth in the 5K with a season-best time of 14:58.11 that ranks third in the MIAA.
Calvin's sophomore Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) took eighth in the 100 meter dash with a season-best time of 11.07. Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of junior
Corbin DeBoer (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS), senior
Lucas VanderPloeg (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS), senior
Morrison Ismond (Ada, Mich./Lowell HS) and VanderWoude took second with a season-best time of 3:20.49 that ranks second on the MIAA performance list.
