Box Score 2 ORLANDO, Fla. - Calvin split its final two matches of its spring break trip to Florida, defeating Covenant College (Ga.) 6-3 and falling to St. Cloud State 7-2. The Knights are now 6-2 on the season.
MATCH ONE RECAP
Calvin 6, Covenant 3
Battling a broiling sun, Calvin picked up its sixth victory of the season with a win over Covenant College.
Calvin took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Senior
Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) were 8-5 winners at No. 1 doubles while freshman
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo HS) and freshman
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) were 8-6 winners at No. 2 doubles.
Calvin took four of the six singles points to seal the win.
Schellenboom downed Lauren Carr 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Grissom was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles over Addi Gunyon.
Senior Lexy Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community HS) claimed a gutsy 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 win over Kacey Melton at No. 5 singles. Sophomore
Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) completed the match with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Alexis Baker at No. 6 singles.
MATCH TWO RECAP
St. Cloud State 7, Calvin 2
Calvin fell to the Division II Huskies 7-2.
Schellenboom and Grissom picked up an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles to get Calvin an early point.
The Knights dropped five of the six singles points however. Freshman
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) was the only singles winner, defeating Maria Molitor 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
COACHES COMMENT: "I'm really proud of this team for the way it competed today," said Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross. "We faced two talented opponents in very warm conditions and never gave up. I think this team improved this week and I love its competitive spirit. We are looking forward to our upcoming competitions."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Grace Christian on March 13 at 6 p.m. inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
