GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin University women's tennis team defeated Indiana University Kokomo 8-1 in a non-conference tune up on Friday at Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Calvin (9-5) jumped in front early by sweeping the three doubles contests to take a 3-0 overall lead in the match. The number-one team of
Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, MIch./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 8-2, followed by an 8-6 win by the number-two team of
Maggie Shoemaker () and
Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community). The number-three team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) swept their match 8-0.
The Knights followed the doubles sweep by taking five of six singles contests to secure the overall 8-1 win.
Holman (6-0, 6-2), Grissom (6-4, 6-3) and
Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) (6-3, 6-0) won their matches in straight sets. Shoemaker (4-6, 6-0, 1-0) and Ganop (6-7, 6-1, 1-0) each overcame first set defeats to win their matches in third-set tiebreakers.
IU Kokomo fell to 5-12 in defeat.
