Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Calvin women's tennis team fell short against Bethel University (IN) with a score of 5-4. The Knights started strong by winning two of the three doubles matches.
The freshman duo of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich/Romeo HS) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) won No. 2 doubles with a score of 8-3.
In No. 3 doubles Senior
Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community HS) and Sophomore
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) secured an 8-2 victory. Despite the early lead the Knights were unable to hold on.
Bethel won 4 out of the 6 singles matches to gain a narrow 5-4 victory over Calvin. Senior
Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fought Alexis Pena to a 6-4, 0-6, 11-9 No. 2 singles victory.
Sophomore
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) handled Fatima Calderon in No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win. In No. 5 singles Ganop battled Moana Martins in a heartbreaking 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 11-9 loss.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was a very competitive match where only a few things separated the final margin of victory," said Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross. "I thought our team gave everything it had to give and I'm proud of the group for that. Bethel has a very strong team and a tight match like this will only help us grow for the upcoming season."
NEXT UP: The Knights will return to the courts Tuesday, March 14 at 4 PM in their MIAA opener against Adrian.
