Calvin Men's Track & Field Takes Third at MIAA Indoor Championships

RESULTS

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin men's track and field team took third place at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Trine University.

The Knights posted a final team score of 103 points, nine points ahead of fourth place Hope and 13.5 points behind second place Albion.

Calvin flexed its muscle in the distance events highlighted by a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 3,000 meter run in the second-to-last event of the meet. The finish allowed the Knights to cement their third place team finish.

Sophomore Thaine Nederveld (Columbus, Oh./Columbus Alternative School) led the way by winning the race in a time of 8:55.37. Senior Will Hofmann (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) was second (8:59.07), senior Brandan Knepper (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area HS) was third (8:59.65) and sophomore Luke Witvliet (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) fourth (9:00.20).

Hofmann led a 1-4-5-6 Calvin finish in the 5,000 meter run, winning the race in a time of 14:58.16 with junior Eric Swinson (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern HS) fourth (15:03.14), Witvliet fifth (15:04.73) and Knepper sixth (15:12.16).

In the mile run, Nederveld took second in a time of 4:16.77 while sophomore Nicholas Henz (Oswego, Il./Oswego East HS) was fifth (4:29.12).

Junior Corbin DeBoer (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was second in the 400 meters with a career-best time of 50.32 while freshman Connor Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) was eighth in a season-best time of 52.35.

Senior Lucas VanderPloeg (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was fifth in the 800 meter run (1:58.00).

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team also had a big day, taking third with a time of 3:27.42. The team consisted of VanderPloeg, Lubberts, DeBoer and senior Carter Hammond (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS).

Calvin led off the meet in the distance medley relay with the team of freshman Brady Vroom (Cedar Lake, Ind./Illiana Christian HS), freshman Colin Jambekar (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS), freshman Kevin Gee (Chicago, Il./Walter Mather HS) and sophomore Ryan Sarkett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair HS) taking fourth in a time of 10:56.39.
Senior Isaac Jonker (Denver, Co./Denver Christian HS) had a career-best mark of 56-1 in the weight throw that was good for second place. Senior Misael Martinez Vasquez (Chicago, Il./Chicago Hope Academy) was eighth with a throw of 48-11 ½.

In the pole vault, junior Jonathan Holdridge (Shoreline, Wash./Shoreline HS) was fourth (10-11 ¾).
