GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA D1 hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the GLCHL Tournament with a 6-5 come-from-behind overtime win over the visiting Western Michigan Stallions Thursday night at Eagles Ice Center.
The Knights (21-6-3) advance to the GLCHL Tournament semifinals and will face Grand Valley State at 8:30 p.m. at Eagles Ice Center.
Calvin trailed 5-4 late in the third period but received a game-tying goal from freshman
Krzysztof Petryla with four minutes left on a perfect pass from senior teammate
Jacob Siebenga. The goal gave Petryla a hat trick.
Petryla was not done as he scored his fourth goal of the game on a wraparound move with 3:15 left in overtime for the game-winner.
Calvin came up with successful penalty kills late in the third period and again in overtime.
The Knights opened the scoring with a first period goal by freshman
Lou Vesperini to take an early 1-0 lead.
After Western Michigan tied the game at one, Petryla followed with back-to-back goals with the second coming with 10 seconds left in the first period to put the Knights up 3-1.
Western Michigan scored an early goal to start the second but freshman
Joel Dieleman scored to make it 4-2 Knights.
Western answered with three unanswered goals to lead 5-4 heading into the final period of play, setting up the late-game heroics by Petryla.
The Knights finished the game with a healthy shots on goal advantage. Sophomore
Garrett Walker came up with 34 saves in between the pipes for Calvin in goal.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had a meltdown in the second period and their goalie was outstanding," said Calvin head coach
Mike Petrusma. "We were resilient after the second period and the guys did a great job staying with the game plan. We will get some rest and get ready for the semifinals."
