GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 1 men's hockey team came up big against Davenport University on Friday night, winning 6-3. The Knights improved their season record to 19-6-3.
Calvin is ranked 16th in the latest ACHA Division 1 national rankings.
Scoring the first goal of the game was
Joshua Tak of Calvin, putting the Knights up 1-0 with 4:30 remaining in the first period. Davenport stayed aggressive and their persistence paid off when Peter Stojcevski knotted the game at 1-1 with only 1:29 remaining. As the seconds ticked down, Davenport was able to add one more goal scored by Ryan Blackburn, with only 7 seconds left. Davenport led 2-1 going into the second period.
Despite a high volume of shots for both teams in the second period, the score remained 2-1 throughout the period. Calvin was able to get off 14 shots, and Davenport 10, but none would beat the opposing goalies.
Calvin did not stay down for long in the third period. While Peter Stojcevski put Davenport up 3-1 with 17:38 remaining, the rest of the game was owned by Calvin. Calvin scored 5 goals in the third, a relief for the home team who only had 1 goal in 31 shots previously in the game.
Steven Ickes scored the first two for Calvin, followed by
Kyle VanDusen,
Krzysztof Petryla, and
Jacob Siebenga.
Calvin ended its explosive third period with a 6-3 win.
Carlos Siso was in net for Calvin and recorded 21 saves. Calvin outshot Davenport 48-24.
NEXT UP: After the weekend series with Davenport, Calvin will play Western Michigan University on Thursday, February 23 on WMU's home ice in Kalamazoo, MI. Start time to be determined.
