GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The 12th-ranked Calvin University men's swimming and diving team competed a strong weekend showing at the Calvin Quad Invite with a first-place finish and a pair of individual school records on Saturday at Venema Aquatic Center
The Knights finished the four-team event with 2053.5 total points, defeating Carthage (827), Ohio Northern (630.5) and Albion (247).
In the morning session,
Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) broke his own school mark with a time of 47.97 in the 100 butterfly, helping him to a first-place finish ahead of
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and
Corey Campbell (Kentwood, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) in the event.
In the evening session,
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) broke Hays' record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.51 to finish ahead of Hays (1:50.21) and
Ted Turnage (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) in second and fourth place, respectively. Platt also took home first place in the 100 backstroke in a time of 52.51, with Turnage finishing second (54.51).
The day started with the 200 medley relay, where the 'A' relay team of
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School),
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Ohio/Homeschool),
Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and
Vlad Molin (Mount Prospect, Ill./Rolling Meadows) finished in a time of 1:30.22 to top two other Calvin teams in the top three.
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview) won the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:03.45, topping Hays, Bajwa,
Austin Martinson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Matea Valley) and
Jacob Ziegler (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) all in the top five for Calvin.
Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville) won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:46.54), finishing just ahead of
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville) in second, followed by
Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian) in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Gemmen led an all-Calvin top three in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.12, ahead of
Mohamed Abujiba (Cairo, Egypt/Summits International School) in second and
Anthony Crudele (Aurora, Ill./Homeschool) in third.
The morning session ended with Calvin taking four of the top five finishes in the 800 freestyle relay, led by the 'A' team of Platt, Hays, Chimes and Seidelman in first place with a time of 7:01.37.
The evening session started with Calvin sweeping the top three in the 1650 freestyle, led by Halberg (16:53.52) and followed by Seidelman and Stimpert.
Calvin also finished with at least the top three finishers in the 100 freestyle, 200 breastroke and 200 butterfly.
Peterson (46.48) edged out Molin (46.62) in the 100 freestyle, with Campbell and
Jazz Widney (Wellsville, N.Y./Jenks) in third and fourth, respectively.
Gemmen added another first place in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.15), followed by Bajwa and Crudele in the top three.
Chimes (1:50.10) won the 200 butterfly, with Camy, Martinson and Ziegler following behind in the top four.
Will Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) finished second in the three-meter diving competition with a total score of 454.87.
Jason Perez (Kalamazoo, Mich./Plainwell) followed him in third place with 348.0 points.
The event ended with the Knights taking home the top four finishes in the 400 freestyle relay. The 'A' team of Peterson, Platt, Molin and Bajwa won the event in a time of 3:03.38.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We really swam with a purpose all weekend, and it was a result of the environment we set on deck," Calvin head coach
Dan Gelderloos said. "That was really cool to see, and we're very proud of all of them."
NEXT UP: Calvin swimming and diving will return to action on Saturday, November 11, when it travels to Wheaton College (Ill.) for a dual meet scheduled to start at 1:00 PM (CST).
