GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin's ACHA Division I hockey team opened its 2022-23 campaign with an empathic 7-0 win over Cleary University Friday night at Eagles Ice Center.
Calvin led 2-0 after one period, 4-0 after two periods and added three power-play goals in the third to seal the win.
Freshman
Joel Dieleman (Brampton, Ont./Bradford Bulls) put the Knights on the board in the first period on an assist from
Joshua Ernst (Dexter, Mich./Provo Riverblades).
The same duo hooked up again five minutes into the second period to give Calvin a 2-0 advantage.
Junior
Kyle VanDusen (Alpena, Mich./Waterloo Siskins) whipped in a goal later in the second period on a feed from senior
Jacob Siebenga (Surrey, B.C./Surrey Christian HS).
VanDusen then set up freshman
Krzysztof Petryla for a short-handed goal in the closing minutes of the second period to give the Knights a commanding 4-0 lead.
A (five-minute) major penalty on Cleary in the third allowed the Knights to seal the win as they popped in three consecutive power-play goals.
Freshman
Keith Schenkel (Brandon, S.D./Minnesota Blue Hawks) scored the opening power-play marker in the late surge with Siebenga and Petryla drawing assists on the play.
VanDusen scored his second goal of the game moments later with Siebenga senior
Ian Elkins (Courtice, Ont./Elliot Lake Wildcats) picking up assists on the play.
Freshman
Ethan Best (Vaughan, Ont./North York Rangers) added Calvin's final power-play goal, cranking in a pass from Ernst.
Freshman Carlos Siso (Calgary, AB/Creston Valley Thunder Cats) got the start in goal and came away with 22 saves.
Calvin held a 53-22 shots on goal advantage.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had a good start to the season tonight," said Calvin head coach
Mike Petrusma. "A lot of good performances from a number of guys. We have some work to do but I'm happy with our effort. Now we have to go on the road and face a team that will be hungry to right the ship."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Cleary for the weekend rubber match on Saturday in a game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Howell, Michigan.
