BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team finished the opening day of the Lou Collins Memorial Tournament in ninth place on Friday at Bedford Valley Country Club.
The Knights finished the day with a team score of 311 strokes. Trine and Adrian lead the 15 teams at the event heading into the second day with matching team scores of 292.
First-year player
Jack Marzolino (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) led the way for the Knights in his first collegiate match, shooting a round of 73 to tie for fifth on the individual leaderboard.
Behind Marzolino,
Tim Braun (Northville, Mich./Northville) shot 78 to tie for 29th place, while
Gannon McDonough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater) and
Matt Turcotte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) shot matching rounds of 80.
Jackson Glanzer (Stevensville, Mich./Berrien Springs) rounded out the Knights' group of five with a score of 82.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We are a team with some talent, but very little collegiate experience and the mindset needed to go with it," head coach
Brian Bolt said. "Today was step one to build that capacity and the process will continue as the season unfolds. Freshman
Jack Marzolino turned in a solid 73 on the first day playing as a Knights, a noteworthy achievement and sign of things to come."
NEXT UP: Calvin men's golf will finish the two-day Lou Collins Memorial Tournament at Bedford Valley Country Club tomorrow (Saturday, September 3). First groups are scheduled to be on the course starting at 8 a.m.
