TECUMSEH, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team put together its best round of the season to finish day one of the Irish Hills Invitational in second place on Thursday at Tecumseh Golf Club.
The Knights finished the day with a team score of 297, just one stroke off Trine University's leading score of 296 strokes. Indiana Tech is currently in third place with a score of 307.
Four Calvin golfers finished the day inside the top 10 on the leaderboard, led by
Tim Braun (Northville, Mich./Northville) in fourth place with a score of 73. Braun opened the round with a three-over par 39 on the front, but came back with a 34 on the back nine that included an eagle on the par-five 16th hole.
Gannon McDonough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater) tied for fifth on the day with a 74, while
Jacob Siebenga (Surrey, B.C./Surrey Christian) and
Jack Marzolino (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) shot matching rounds of 75 to tie for ninth place.
Cade VandenBosch (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was the team's fifth player and tied for 24th on the day with a score of 79.
COACH'S COMMENT: "This was our first round on a new course, but the guys kept their focus and were seeing some positive results," Calvin men's golf head coach
Brian Bolt said. "One stroke out of first place after day one is a good place to be. Tomorrow we'll have to dial it in."
