ALMA, MI - The Calvin baseball team picked up a big conference win over Alma on Monday afternoon with a final score of 7-5.
The Knights move into a tie for fourth place with Trine at 9-9 in league play with the win while moving to 16-15 overall.
The Knights started the contest by scoring the first run of the game with an RBI single by senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott). Alma answered in the bottom of the first with two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
Calvin quickly put up another run in the second with junior Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) scoring on an error to tie the game at 2-2. The Scots regained their lead over the Knights by holding them scoreless in the third and fourth inning but scored three runs to lead 5-2.
In the top of the fifth, the Knights put up four runs in the inning that started with a two-run RBI double by senior Rick Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) to only 5-4. The Knights added two more runs with senior J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) putting the ball in play and runners scoring on a pair of Alma errors to give Calvin a 6-5 lead.
The pitching for the Knights held the Scots scoreless in the fifth and sixth inning. On offense, Calvin added another run with an RBI single by Padilla to put the Knights up 7-5. Senior Hayden White (Spring Valley, CA / Grossmont) tossed the final six innings in relief for Calvin to hold Alma to secure the 7-5 win. White struck out six batters in upping his season record to 4-2. Freshman Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, IN / Valparaiso) got the start and went the first three innings for the Knights.
COACHES COMMENTS: "We entered this week exited to be able to play meaningful games," said head coach Kevin Van Duyn. "We had clutch hitting today with Rick Padilla leading the way with three hits. We played great defense and had six solid innings in relief from Hayden White."
