The Calvin women's track and field had a record-setting weekend. Sophomore Delaney Sall shattered the Calvin outdoor record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.20 Friday night at the Davenport University Invitational Friday night.
Her times was not only good for first place on Friday night, but also is the second-fastest time in Division III women's outdoor track and field this spring.
Her time breaks the previous Calvin record of 2:09.27 set by Lauren Bergstrom in 2009.
Also competing on Friday and coming up with a big performance was senior Kamryn Elgersma (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy). Elgersma competed in the javelin at the Jack Shaw Invitational on the campus of Western Michigan University Friday afternoon. She took second in the event with a career-best throw of 142-7, besting her previous career best by more than seven feet. Elgersma's throw ranks fifth nationally this spring in women's track and field.
Also taking first place at the Davenport Invitational was senior Sadie Heeringa (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who won the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:42.38, just over a second off her personal best. Junior Sienna Ruiter-Diaz (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) was 12th in a career-best time of 17:32.60.
Also competing in the 800 meters for Calvin was freshman Natalie Tebben (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) who placed 15th in a time of 2:27.27.
Another big highlight for the Calvin women on Friday at the Davenport Invitational was the performance of sophomore Jenna Allman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline HS) who placed second in the steeplechase with a career-best time of 11:05.48 that places her 13th on the NCAA III performance list this spring. Senior Brynne Winiarski (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was fourth in the race with a career-best time of 11:52.60.
Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Cora Moore (Phoenix, Az./North Phoenix Prep), junior Katie Georges (Bartonville, Il./Limestone Community), senior Sadie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Samantha Buist (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) took second in a time of 52.63.
Moore was seventh in the 400 meters (1:03.33) while Georges was eighth (1:04.09).
In the field events, freshman Jessye Vanden Akker (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) took second in the triple jump (35-0 ¼).
Sophomore Olivia Vande Vegte (Bellflower, Ca./Valley Christian HS) was seventh in the javelin (90-2) while junior Claire Sheppard (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater HS) was eighth in the long jump (15-7 ¾).
In the hammer throw, senior Waverly VerHill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian HS) was ninth in the hammer throw (153-2), freshman Karen Bekhet (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was ninth in the shot put (37-7 ¾) and senior Rachel Herwyer (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) was ninth in the discus (115-10).
NEXT UP: Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Championships next Thursday and Friday at Albion College.
