Calvin Women's Lacrosse Belts League-Leading Britons - Gilbert Sets New Calvin Single-Season Goals Mark

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin women's lacrosse secured a conference win over league-leading Albion with a final score of 15-10 on Wednesday evening at Zuidema Field. 

The Knights began the game by outscoring the Britons 3-1 in the first quarter with senior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, MI / Holt) scoring all three goals. 

Calvin continued to add goals to its lead with two quick ones to start the second quarter. Sophomore Kelly Ruha (Plymouth, MN / Robbinsville Armstrong) and senior Brenna Otte (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) each scored a goal to take a 5-1 lead over Albion. 

Albion battled back in the game by scoring four straight goals to tie the game at 5-5. Ruha added one more goal before the half to give Calvin a 6-5 lead. 

The Knights came out firing out of the halftime as they outscored scored the Britons 7-2 to extend their lead to 13-7 going into the fourth. Otte, Ruha and junior Mekaelah McClymont (Camp Hill, PA / Covenant Christian Academy) each had a goal in the third while Gilbert scored four goals. 

Calvin maintained its lead over Albion in the fourth with two more goals by Otte to push the advantage to 15-8. The Britons scored three goals as the game winded down, but it was too late. 

The Knights held on to pick up the win with a final score of 15-10 to improve to 6-8 overall on the season and 3-3 in the MIAA. 

Megan Gilbert led the Knights with 7 goals on the evening bringing her season total to 70 goals which is a new Calvin single season record for goals passing Emily Cefaratti who had 69 goals in 2015. 

Otte finished the game with 4 goals and 2 assists while Ruha ended the nights with 3 goals. Junior Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, IL / O'Fallon Township High School) collected 7 saves in the win for the Knights. 

COACH'S COMMENTS: "We finally felt like oursleves tonight," said head coach Balke Boehm. "The team came out strong, fast and determined. They stayed focused on the little things throughout the game and their efforts were rewarded. Goaltending was incredible, defense stayed united, offense attacked from all angles and we were tenacious in transition. Special congrats to Megan Gilbert for setting a program record for most goals in a single season (70)!"
