ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin women's track and field team competed at the Al Owens Invitational on Friday and Saturday on the campus of Grand Valley State University.
Senior Sadie Heeringa (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) led a 1-3 finish in the 1500 meter run, winning the race in a time of 4:37.23 while sophomore teammate Delaney Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third (4:38.58). The time by Heeringa ranks 21st nationally while the time by Sall ranks 27th.
Calvin had a strong weekend in the field events. Competing in a driving rain storm on Friday, senior Kamryn Elgersma (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy) took second in the javelin (128-0).
Freshman Karen Bekhet (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) had a big weekend, taking fifth in the shot put (38-1 ¼) and fourth in the discus (124-2). Freshman Lindsey Kossick (Greenwood, Ind./Centergrove HS) was sixth in the discus (122-6).
Senior Waverly VerHill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian HS) was seventh in the hammer throw invitational during Friday's rainstorm, producing a mark of 147-0
Freshman Jessye Vanden Akker (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was fourth in the triple jump (34-2 ¾) while senior Renee Miller (Marlette, Mich./Marlette HS) placed seventh in the long jump (16-0 ¼).
In the pole vault, freshman Isabella Charron (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) was seventh (9 -4 ¼).
Calvin had a pair of strong times in the 200 meters on Saturday. Miller was 13th in a time of 26.35 while freshman Cora Moore (Phoenix, Az./North Phoenix Prep) was 14th (26.44).
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of junior Katie Georges (Bartonville, Il./Limestone Community), Heeringa, Sall and Moore took third in a season-best time of 4:05.71. Its 4x100 meter relay team of senior Sadie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Georges, senior Kelli Mannes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Christian HS) and Miller took eighth in a time of 51.78.
COACHES COMMENT: "We had some really outstanding performances," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "Our athletes fought through rain on Friday and strong winds on Saturday all in the midst of final exams. We did well on the track and in the field. It was a good weekend for our team."
NEXT UP: Calvin will compete at the State Farm Invitational Friday and Saturday at Davenport University.
