GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's outdoor track and field team posted several standout performances at the Calvin Spring Thing Invitational on Thursday.
Calvin had a standout showing in the steeplechase as sophomore Jenna Allman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline HS) won the race in a time of 11:30.04 while senior Brynne Winiarski (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was third (11:55.11).
Battling a strong cross wind, sophomore Delaney Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the 400 meter dash in a time of 58.60.
First place honors also went to senior Kamryn Elgersma (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy) in the javelin (130-11). Her throw ranks 14th on the NCAA III performance list.
In the hammer throw, senior Waverly VerHill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian HS) was second (152-5).
In the shot put, freshman Karen Bekhet (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was fifth (35-10) and senior Tanya Visser (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) sixth (35-6).
Calvin went 5-6-7-8 in the discus with freshman Linsday Kossick (Greenwood, Ind./Centergrove HS) taking fifth (119-10), senior Rachel Herwyer (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) placing sixth (119-5), Bekhet taking seventh (115-6) and sophomore Jane Dunlop (Kingsley, Mich./Kingsley HS) eighth (110-8).
Calvin's 5,000 meter run contingent went 3-4-5 with freshman Naomi Dykstra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids City HS) taking third (18:53.54), junior Josian Aardema (Grand Haven, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) placing fourth (19:15.97) and sophomore Emma Allen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) fifth (19:36.97).
The Calvin 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Madelyn Helmus (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS), Judy Veldboom (Ellsworth, Mich./Ellsworth Community Schools), freshman Marissa McManus (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) and freshman Cora Moore (Phoenix, Az./North Phoenix Prep) placing third (4:27.84).
NEXT UP: Calvin will compete at the Al Owens Classic on April 22 and 23 on the campus of Grand Valley State University.
