NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Calvin softball team suffered a hard-fought 19-16 loss at Saint Mary's Friday afternoon.

The Knights are now 5-7 overall and 2-2 in MIAA competition.

Saint Mary's led 5-2 after one quarter of play and held a 9-7 edge at halftime.

Calvin outscored the Belles (6-4 overall, 2-0 MIAA) 7-4 in the third quarter to lead 14-13 heading into the final quarter of play.

Saint Mary's scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to build a 17-14 lead. Senior Madison Brown (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) broke the Saint Mary's scoring streak with a goal on a feed from senior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) with 6:04 remaining. Senior Brenna Otte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored unassisted just over a minute later to bring the Knights to within one at 17-16.

The Belles answered with a goal on a free position shot with 3:33 remaining. Calvin tried to come back with a series of shots, hitting the post on one try with 1:21 remaining but Saint Mary's kept the Knights from scoring again and added a clinching goal in the final seconds to cement the win.

Gilbert tallied six goals, three assists and 13 ground balls. Brown had five goals, two ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Sophomore Kelly Ruha (Plymouth, Mn./Robbinsville Armstrong HS) had three goals and three ground balls. Senior Brenna Otte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) added two goals and four draw controls.

Junior Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, Il./O'Fallon Township High School) recorded 10 saves and five ground balls.

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Hope next Saturday for a 1 p.m. rivalry match.
