DELAWARE, Oh. – The Calvin women's track and field team took third in a field of 14 teams at the Ohio Wesleyan Marv Frye Invitational, posting a team score of 97 points.
Sophomore Delaney Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) highlighted the meet by winning the 800 meters on a wind-swept track with a career-best time of 2:10.35. The time currently ranks third nationally.
Sall was part of a 1-5-8 finish in the 800 meters with sophomore Jenna Allman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline HS) was second (2:23.47) and junior Sienna Ruiter-Diaz (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) eighth (2:29.85).
Calvin went 2-5-6-7 in the 1500 meter run with Allman taking second with a career-best time of 4:45.35 while freshman Natalie Tebben (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) was fifth (5:04.20), senior Brynne Winiarski (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) sixth (5:04.36) and Ruiter-Diaz seventh (5:04.59).
Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of senior Kelli Mannes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Christian HS), freshman Cora Moore (Phoenix, AZ/North Phoenix Prep), junior Katie Georges (Bartonville, Il./Limestone Community) and senior Sadie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second in 52.38.
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Georges, Moore, Sall and freshman Naomi Dykstra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids City HS) took first place in a time of 4:13.21.
Sophomore Jessye Vanden Akker (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) had a sterling day, winning the triple jump (33-8 ¾) while placing third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:13.40).
Freshman Isabella Charron (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) placed eighth in the pole vault (9-6 ½) while junior Clarissa Sheppard (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater HS) scored with an eighth place finish in the long jump (14-3).
Freshman Karen Bekhet (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was fifth in the shot put (35-6 ½).
In the discus, Calvin went 3-7 as senior Rachel Herwyer (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was third (115-10) and freshman Lindsey Kossick (Greenwood, Ind./Centergrove HS) seventh (109-6).
Senior Waverly VerHill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian HS) was third in the hammer throw (149-9) and sophomore Olivia Vande Vegte (Bellflower, CA./Valley Christian HS) fourth in the javelin (77-4).
COACHES COMMENT: "It was a good day for our team," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "We had several career-best performances. It was a cold and windy day but I thought our athletes competed well."
