Box Score GEORGETOWN, Tx. – Calvin concluded its spring break trip to Texas with a 14-9 loss at Southwestern University Friday night.
Calvin (1-1) tied the game 5-5 early in the second quarter but the Pirates (2-0) scored the final two goals of the quarter to lead 7-5 at halftime and carried the momentum into the second half.
Southwestern outscored Calvin 4-1 in the third quarter to build an 11-6 lead. The Knights traded goals with the Pirates in the fourth quarter with each side scoring three times over the final 15 minutes.
Calvin's second quarter surge was fueled by three straight goals by junior Lainey Aldridge (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Point North HS), freshman Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg HS) and junior Cosette Ferris (Delafield, Wisc./Arrowhead HS) that tied the game 5-5 after the Knights had fallen behind 5-2.
Ferris, Chang and senior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) all had two goals apiece. Gilbert and junior Eva Doorlag (Ypsilanti, Mich./Saline HS) caused three Southwestern turnovers.
Sophomore Kelly Ruha (Plymouth, Mn./Robbinsville Armstrong HS) and senior Madison Brown (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) also scored goals for the Knights.
Junior goalie Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, Il./O'Fallon Township HS) made 12 saves for the Knights while scooping up two ground balls.
The Knights return home next Wednesday to face Concordia (Mich.) at 5 p.m. in Grand Rapids.
