Calvin Women's Tennis completed two matches today and won the first match against Houghton with a team score of 7-2 followed by a 6-3 win over Concordia-Moorhead (Mn.).
MATCH ONE
Calvin 7, Houghton 2
Senior Emily Schellenboom and freshman Catherine Grissom recorded an 8-2 win against Chloe Esch and Hialeah Johnson. At. No. 2 doubles, senior Grace Brown and Maggie Shoemaker took down Marilyn Amborski and Gariana Valentin 8-0. Senior Alexis Ganop and junior Cameron Cyrus won by default at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Sara Kroeze was downed by Amborski 6-1, 1-6, 7-10 at No. 1 singles. Sarah McCormick fell shot at No. 2 singles to Esch with a score of 2-6, 4-6. In the No. 3 singles, Igne Savickas toppled Valentin with final of 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Marissa Baker defeated Johnson 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Cam Cyrus was victorious at the No. 5 singles by taking down Empress Weber 6-0, 6-0 while Ganop won by default at No. 6 singles.
MATCH TWO
Calvin 6, Concordia-Moorhead 3
Calvin remained unbeaten on the day and on the season with a 6-3 win over Concordia-Moorhead.
Calvin claimed only one of the three doubles points but came back to win five of the six singles points to claim the match.
Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 1 doubles with senior Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) teaming up with freshman Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) for an 8-5 win.
The Knights rallied in singles play as senior Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Grissom was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles.
Freshman Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles while senior Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community) won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
